The archaeological site of Ancient Olympia and the museum, close to where firefighters are still trying to put out fires, was protected by its systems, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni told Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who was visiting the area earlier on Thursday.
Watering systems running for several days helped keep the area wet over several days, while flammable materials on the site had been cleaned or pruned, she said. In addition, the Fire Brigade created fire zones aroung the area.
Mitsotakis thanked the residents of the area for coordinating with the firefighters including on the evacuations of several communities near the site, before heading to Attica and the Varybobi fire.
