Rowers Maria Kyridou and Christina Bourmpou finished first in first semifinal at Sea Forest Waterway, Tokyo, on Wednesday, during the race they broke the world record with 6:48.70s. The New Zealand team reclaimed the world’s best time in the next race.
Kyridou and Bourmpou reportedly did not have a good start but managed to recover after the first 1500 m.
“We are still unable to realized what happened! the more we saw we were approaching the boats that were leading, the more energy we released,” the rowers told media, still panting from the effort.
The Greek champions will compete in the finals at 3:30 a.m. (Greek time) tomorrow Thursday, July 29.
The ultimate goal is a place in the winners podium with a gold medal.
